Lab techniques

What are the equipments required in a physics lab?

Science, in particular, physics is all about understanding the fundamentals of matter. It involves amazing experiments to establish and verify the laws. For this, different sets of high-quality equipment are required. The instruments should be error-free and easy to calibrate to yield accurate results. There are multiple numbers of equipment which is used in a physics lab. Some pieces of equipment that are of due importance in a physics lab are as follows: vernier callipers, resistor, rheostat, magnetic compass, lenses, stands, prisms, ammeter, bifilar suspension and many more.

Some of them are discussed below with the name of the equipment and their uses:

Rheostat

It is a malleable resistor that is used for controlling current. It controls the electrical resistance of a circuit without blocking. For eg- the speed of motors, heaters and ovens.

Wave Motion Model

This apparatus helps to observe the motion of transverse waves.

Bifilar suspension

This is a torsional pendulum used to measure the mass moment of inertia of an object.

Voltmeter

It is an instrument that is used in measuring the electrical potential difference between the two points of an electric circuit that is connected in parallel. It usually has high resistance so that it takes insignificant current from the circuit.

Ammeter

It is an instrument that is used to measure the current, it is used for either direct or alternating current in a circuit. The electric circuits are measured in amperes (A). This instrument can measure a vast range of current values because at high values only a small portion of the current is directed through the meter mechanism.

Galvanometer

It is the device that is used for detecting and measuring the presence of even very small electrical currents and voltage deflections. It is mostly used in bridges and potentiometers where it can indicate the void deflection or zero current.

Spring Balance

Source: Wikipedia

It is a meter type that consists of at one end with a hook to attach at other. It measures the weight of an object by opposing the force of gravity acting with the force of an expanding spring.

Resistance Box

It is an instrument that has multiple resistors hooked to one or multiple switches which are used for measuring and comparing electrical currents. It is used to control the specific value of current to flow through the circuit.

Vernier Calliper and Digital Calliper

Named after Pierre Vernier, this is a scale that is used to measure the distance between the two opposing sides of any object. Vernier calliper is also used to measure the diameter of round and cylindrical objects, by positioning the jaws of the calliper on either side of the circumference. Digital callipers show the reading on the LCD screen.

Diesel engine

It is used to define the fundamental structure and the working principle of a four-stroke single-cylinder diesel engine.

Wheatstone bridge

It is used to determine the resistance of an unknown resistor using Kirchoff’s law.

Battery Eliminator

Source: Wikipedia

It is an electronic device that is powered by an electrical source other than a battery device powered by an electrical source other than a battery, which then converts the source to a battery eliminator’s output is DC voltage which usually varies from 1.5 V/3 V to 12 Volts/up to 500 mA.

Ohm’s Law Apparatus

It is used to verify Ohm’s law which states that the potential difference or the voltage across an ideal conductor is proven to be proportional to the current through it. The amount of steady current through a large number of materials and the potential difference is directly proportional to each other.

Magnetic Compass

Magnetic Compass

It is a magnetic instrument that is basically used to find directions on the surface of the earth which means a magnetic pointer that aligns itself with Earth’s magnetic field. A magnetized needle which is called a compass rose stuck through a piece of cork makes a simple magnetic compass.

Travelling Microscope

It finds usage in measuring the refractive index of flat samples through Duc de Chaulnes’ method.
